Artist in Residence vol.02 Silver Leaf
"An 'Artist in Residence Program' inviting artists from outside the islands to create works that express the charm of Amami Oshima. As the second installment, we had artist Shuhei Fukuda create a work using silver leaf during his stay. It is on permanent display at Ryukyu Villa Bilow."
Work Title: Untitled AMAMI 2024
Material: Silver leaf, ink
In this stay and production in Amami, by applying the silver leaf in its original state to the sliding doors, I entrusted its discoloration to the warm and humid climate of Amami. The discoloration brought about by the sea-facing sea breeze and the natural environment surrounded by the Bilo palm and Sago palm is sure to bring about a change that can only be prompted here and now. Works that undergo such a process will have a stronger sense of "site specificity" compared to conventional works, emphasizing another unknown aspect of the natural world that exists along the extension of people's realistic time axis, rather than just the material aspect. Shuhei Fukuda
Artist / Curator
Born in Japan.
Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School of Fine Arts, Major in Fine Arts, First Research Laboratory of Mural Painting, currently enrolled in the doctoral program.
After honing my skills in Japanese painting, I am attempting a modern approach using traditional Japanese materials and techniques.
In particular, using silver foil as the material, the work represents the discoloration that occurs in silver as a gentle relationship between the artist and the material by leaving the work in a natural state. By strongly presenting the materiality of the material and the work on the surface, it pursues an Eastern view of nature and aesthetic sense that values the natural state of things.
